The Challenge:

At ITFixio, we were contacted by a business director in Thrapston after they became the target of a sophisticated cyber scam disguised as a Windows security alert.

The user had received a fake pop-up warning claiming their computer had been infected with a Trojan virus. Believing the alert to be genuine, they called the number displayed on screen and unfortunately granted remote access to the device through Microsoft Quick Assist.

During the incident, the scammers:

• Attempted to install unauthorised remote access tools
• Requested payment for fake “Microsoft security”
• Collected bank card details
• Attempted further fraudulent transactions

Although the client’s bank acted quickly to block most of the fraudulent activity, the business was understandably concerned about:
